Who We Are
Libertas is a non-profit charter school organization. In 2014, Brookmeade Elementary School was placed into the Tennessee Achievement School District, and Libertas was selected to operate Brookmeade as a neighborhood-based school of choice. Libertas serves Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade, and will grow eventually to serve children from 3 to 12 years old (Pre-K to 6th grade). Our experienced and dedicated faculty of teachers and support staff have many combined years of educational experience in public and private schools in Memphis and around the country. Montessori is normally only available in private schools, but now is available as a free public school.
What We Do
Libertas offers the personalized and rich approach of Montessori learning. Montessori is a unique educational approach that nurtures a child's intrinsic desire to learn. Montessori learning is for the whole child - minds, hands, and heart - cognitive, physical, and social-emotional development. In a Montessori environment, children receive lessons from teachers about how to use a variety of high-quality materials; the children then learn by exploring and working independently with these materials. Children work with materials at their own pace, repeating an exercise until it is mastered. The teacher may gently guide the process, but her goal is to inspire. In addition to the regular subjects, children study literature, poetry, art, music, foreign language, gardening, and their history, to find purpose in learning.
