What We Do
The mission of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all. Y-CAP is an early intervention program that helps at-risk youth and families in trouble get back on track. Specifically, Y-CAP supports families through community based intervention that addresses co-occurring issues of educational achievement and behavior problems. Two components comprise services. Y-CAP works with 10-15 year olds and their families in a year-round intensive program that provides wrap-around services to families. Additionally, Y-CAP serves 6-8 year old children in a summer learning loss prevention program (SLLPP). Y-CAP families are professionally referred by school personnel. The youth and families are identified for risk factors including severe conduct issues and academic achievement. Y-CAP’s core program targets 10 -15 year olds and their families year-round. Y-CAP’s core program for 10-15 year olds operates in an afterschool setting and throughout the summer. The services include transportation, behavior management lessons (social skills), tutoring, art therapy and earned recreation. Outside of program time services include intakes, school conferences, home visits, family sessions, on-call family support and community referrals. SLLPP uses certified teachers to reach 6-8 year olds in need of additional reading intervention. These students are from Title-1 schools. During the 6-week program students will receive an intensive reading program paired with enrichment activities like music, art, health, character development and STEM.
