Who We Are

Previously named the Memphis Literacy Council, Literacy Mid-South has been working to increase the literacy of Mid-Southerners for over 40 years through group literacy classes, individual tutoring, and resourcing other non-profits that work toward our mission of creating a community actively engaged in continuous learning.

What We Do

The mission of Literacy Mid-South is to provide literacy resources for learners of all ages and all backgrounds. The Adult Learning Program at Literacy Mid-South provides basic education for low-literate adults whose reading ability is at a 6th grade equivalency level or below. More than 250 trained volunteer tutors provide weekly individual and small-group tutoring sessions to adults who want to improve their reading ability and pursue their personal goals. Volunteer tutors and students meet in 31 partner library locations and other designated community spaces throughout our service area. The program draws upon more than 40 years of experience in community literacy education as well as contributions from literacy and education professionals around our community, and has received awards for excellence in programming. The program also assists other groups to expand literacy services for special populations, meeting low-literate adults where they are in the community. Tutor training and program development services are available to emerging and current programs throughout Memphis and the Mid-South.
