Who We Are
Our Mission:
to be a witness to the all inclusive love of God, revealed in the Sacred Heart of Jesus, to be a voice of compassion for people in need, and to be steadfast in our work for social justice.
Since 1942, Sacred Heart Southern Missions has provided a myriad of services and programs to area clients with specific focus on the poor, elderly, and/or disabled throughout five counties in northern Mississippi.
What We Do
Our ministry team, comprised of more than 180 employees, including priests, religious and laity, provides material assistance and Christ's hope to the poorest of the poor.
Through our six Social Service Offices, we help those in need with food, clothing, prescription assistance, rent and utility assistance, housing, education, needed home repairs and other aid.
Our programs include:
Food Ministries--
• Our six food pantries distributed more than 317 tons of food last year!
• Our Garden Café, a twice-weekly soup kitchen feeding approximately 100 at each seating.
• Holiday food baskets distributed to more than 500 families.
Thrift Store--
• SHSM Thrift Store sells donated gently used clothing and household goods at nominal prices.
• Families affected by house fires, natural disasters or economic troubles are issued vouchers to obtain items at no cost.
Project New Beginnings--
Prepares the unemployed for employment opportunities through adult continuing education in basic computer training, job readiness skills, and GED classes.
Housing--
• Dehon Village--a 38-home low-income rental neighborhood
• Adult skill development courses on budget, credit counseling and home-buyer education.
• We have helped build over 75 homes for low income families and maintain scattered site rental housing.
Project Good Mother--
A series of class sessions to educate teen mothers about pre-natal care, childcare, parenting and the importance of completing school.
Education--
SHSM educational programs range from pre-school to adult.
• Sacred Heart School, Southaven, MS
• Holy Family School, Holly Springs
• Adult Continuing Education Classes at all social service offices (including budgeting, home buyer ed, life skills, job skills and more)
HIV/AIDS Ministry--
Provides basic social services, medical transportation, needs assessment, referral services and group counseling for those affected by HIV and AIDS.
Volunteer Program--
NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED! Whether you have a few hours, a few days, a few weeks or more, we can work with your schedule! We welcome volunteers of any age, with any skill or talent, at almost any time of the year. Most high school and college groups work repairing or winterizing the homes of the elderly or disabled poor. Adults also participate with repairs but are also matched to whichever program can best use their interests, talents and skills. Some volunteers work directly with the people in need. Others work behind the scenes. All provide much needed assistance and get the satisfaction of helping others.
