What We Do
RISE empowers people to become self-sufficient by building and sustaining human and financial assets
RISE has considered many avenues to respond to the need for financial literacy education requests from social services agencies in the Memphis area who work with low income families. RISE was eager to field test a financial literacy tool kit for case managers developed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in 2014. We trained case managers from four different organizations but it was clear that the material was not only needed by clients being served, but by the case managers as well. This past year, RISE became involved with the Transition To Success Collaborative (TTS) that involves local organizations that have trained their staff in a system of care to treat the condition of poverty. This training was developed by Human Service Matrix in Detroit Michigan. RISE was a participant in the second cohort of “train-the-trainers” to implement the model in Shelby County. Financial Literacy is a critical piece in this model and depends on the ability of case managers to either provide this type of service or refer their clients to other organizations that provide the service. . To meet this growing need, RISE proposes to train one person in each social services organization (including TTS) to provide financial literacy education to their staff so that it can be used in their normal course of service provisions with clients. RISE would also provide continuing education for those who are trained that will include observations, and up-to-date subject matter content.
